Purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) is a tough, long-flowering perennial. Buy it in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery in assorted varieties; the exact variety and flower colour are confirmed at purchase.
Large daisy-like flowers appear from July to September and attract butterflies, bees and other pollinators. They also make good cut flowers.
The species usually grows 60–90 cm tall, loves sun and is very hardy (USDA zone 3), which makes it a great choice for Estonian gardens.

Agronoma ieteikumi
Planting. Plant in a sunny spot in well-drained soil, 40–50 cm apart. The best planting time is spring to early autumn.
Watering and feeding. Water regularly in the first summer; established plants are drought tolerant. Little feeding is needed – a handful of compost in spring is enough.
Care. Deadhead to extend flowering. In autumn you can leave the stems – the seed heads look good in winter and feed birds; cut them back in spring.
Gardener's tip. Avoid wet sites – winter waterlogging is more dangerous for coneflowers than frost.
