Globe thistle Echinops ritro, 1 l pot
Seller: ALLIKASILM
About this product
Echinops ritro (globe thistle) is a striking perennial with metallic blue spherical flower heads above silvery, spiny, thistle-like foliage. It is drought tolerant and very hardy. Buy Echinops ritro in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
It grows 60–90 cm tall and flowers from July to September; cut back after flowering, it may bloom again in late summer. The heads attract bees, bumblebees and butterflies.
Use it in sunny borders, gravel and wildlife gardens and for cutting — the dried heads keep their colour and shape in dried arrangements.

Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Plant from May to September in full sun, 50–60 cm apart. It has a deep taproot, so choose the final spot straight away — it resents being moved.
Watering and feeding. Water after planting and during droughts in the first summer; established plants need no watering. Feed lightly in spring — too much nitrogen makes the stems flop.
Care. Cut spent stems if you want a second flush or to prevent self-seeding. For drying, cut the heads when they have turned blue but before the florets open.
Gardener's tip. In wet, heavy soil the root may rot over winter — on clay use a raised bed or add grit.
