Eryngium alpinum (alpine sea holly)
Seller: ALLIKASILM
About this product
Eryngium alpinum (alpine sea holly) is a perennial with ornamental blue flower heads and lacy bracts. Buy alpine sea holly in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
Its beauty lies in the purplish-blue cone-shaped flower heads framed by soft, lacy blue bracts; the stems are tinged blue too. Height 60–90 cm, flowering midsummer to early autumn. Tolerates drought and poor soil.
Suits sunny borders, rock gardens, dry gardens, cutting and dried arrangements. Attracts bees and butterflies; the seed heads look good in winter.

Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Sea holly has a deep taproot, so choose a permanent spot — mature plants resent being moved.
Watering and feeding. Water after planting until established. Once settled it is drought tolerant and low-maintenance. No feeding needed — in rich soil the stems flop.
Care. For drying, cut the heads when fully coloured. Leave the rest standing for winter interest and for birds.
Overwintering. Alpine sea holly is very hardy. Cut back old stems in early spring. Standing water in winter is the main danger.
