Bamboo Fargesia
Seller: ALLIKASILM
About this product
Fargesia is a hardy clump-forming bamboo that does not spread by underground runners and stays where it is planted – which makes it the best bamboo for gardens in Estonia. The species and variety of this plant are not specified: the genus includes, for example, Fargesia murielae and Fargesia nitida, both proven in our climate. Buy Fargesia bamboo in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
The plant forms a dense clump of slender canes and narrow evergreen leaves that rustle in the wind and give the garden an oriental feel. In Estonia a mature Fargesia usually reaches 1.5–2.5 m, taller in a favourable spot. In frost and dry winter weather the leaves roll up – a natural protection; they open again in spring.
The hardiest species of the genus tolerate frost down to about –25…–28 °C (USDA zone 5). Fargesia grows best in part shade, in a spot sheltered from wind, in moist, humus-rich soil. Ideal for hedges, as a specimen, for a shady corner and in large containers.

Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Plant from spring until late August in part shade, in a spot sheltered from wind. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, mix the soil with compost or peat and plant at the same depth as in the pot. For a hedge space plants 70–100 cm apart.
Watering and feeding. Fargesia needs evenly moist soil – water regularly in the first summer and generously in drought. A mulch of bark or leaves keeps moisture in. Feed in spring and early summer with a nitrogen-rich lawn or bamboo fertiliser; stop feeding from August.
Care. In autumn water the plant thoroughly before the ground freezes – an evergreen bamboo loses water in winter too. Protect young plants in the first winters from February–March sun and drying wind with spruce branches or shade cloth. In spring cut out old and damaged canes.
Gardener's tip. Leaves that roll up in winter do not mean the plant has died – this is how bamboo saves water. If some leaves turn brown in spring, wait calmly until June: new leaves and canes will grow from the centre of the clump.
