About this product

Blue fescue Festuca glauca is a compact evergreen ornamental grass with blue-grey foliage forming neat, dome-shaped tufts. Buy blue fescue in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.

The fine, needle-like leaves are steel-grey to silvery blue, and clumps reach about 20–30 cm. In June–July light flower panicles appear above the foliage and later turn golden brown.

The plant is drought tolerant (USDA 4–8) and prefers sun and dry, free-draining soil. Use it in rock gardens, edging, gravel beds and containers.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in spring or early autumn in full sun; add sand or fine gravel to heavy clay. Space plants 25–30 cm apart.

Watering and feeding. Water only while establishing and during long droughts. Feeding is hardly needed – too much fertiliser weakens the blue colour.

Care. In spring comb out dead leaves with your fingers; flower stems can be cut off after flowering. Divide and replant every 2–3 years, as the centre tends to die out.

Gardener's tip. The most intense blue develops in full sun and lean, dry soil.
