About this product

Alpine strawberry "Yellow vesca" is a yellow-fruited everbearing alpine strawberry (Fragaria vesca) that crops all summer. The small conical berries are creamy yellow and very aromatic, with a wild-strawberry flavour and a hint of pineapple. Buy yellow alpine strawberry in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.

The plant forms a low clump 15–25 cm tall and produces few or no runners, so the bed stays tidy. It flowers and fruits from June to September. Birds notice yellow berries less than red ones – so more of the harvest is left for you.

Alpine strawberry is very hardy (USDA zone 3) and grows well in Estonia. It prefers sun or part shade and humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil. Ideal for bed edges, herb gardens, balcony boxes, pots and rock gardens.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant from spring until late August in sun or part shade, 25–30 cm apart. Add compost to the soil and plant so that the crown is level with the surface – a buried crown rots, one set too high dries out.

Watering and feeding. Water regularly, especially during flowering and fruiting – in hot, dry soil the berries stay small. Mulch with straw, grass clippings or pine needles to keep moisture in and the berries clean. Feed in spring and after the first flush of fruit with a berry fertiliser.

Care. Pick the berries fully ripe, when they are creamy yellow and slightly soft – the aroma is then at its strongest. Remove dead leaves in spring. Clumps age within 3–4 years; renew them by division in spring.

Gardener's tip. As few runners are produced, propagate yellow alpine strawberries by division or from seed. Plant a few in a pot near the kitchen window or on the balcony – you can pick fresh berries straight for breakfast.
