Sea buckthorn "Lord", male plant
Seller: ALLIKASILM
About this product
Lord is a male sea buckthorn plant: it bears no berries itself, but it is the pollinator without which female sea buckthorns do not fruit.
Sea buckthorn is dioecious: berries grow only on the female plant, and only when a male is nearby. One male pollinates 5–6 females. Lord suits all female sea buckthorn varieties; unlike apple trees, sea buckthorn has no incompatible pairs. Pollination is by wind only: the flowers produce no nectar and insects do not pollinate them. Height 3–6 m, USDA zone 2, down to −40 °C, so it overwinters in Estonia with a large margin. It grows on poor sandy and gravelly soils, fixes nitrogen itself and needs no fertiliser.

Advice from our agronomist
Bought on its own, it will give no crop. 'Lord' is a male plant. Buy female varieties alongside it, or you will have no berries.
Plant the male on the windward side. Estonia's prevailing winds are westerly and south-westerly, so put 'Lord' to the west or south-west of the females. Downwind, the pollen blows past them.
No further than 15 metres. In an exposed spot, plant closer.
Full sun and dry feet. Sea buckthorn wants poor sandy or gravelly soil that does not hold water. On heavy wet clay it dies.
No feeding required. The plant fixes its own nitrogen; rich soil pushes growth at the expense of fruit.
The plant is thorny. Bear that in mind near a path or a play area.
