About this product

Eastern white cedar "Rheingold" (Thuja occidentalis) — a cultivar of eastern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis), a slow-growing shrub with golden-yellow foliage that turns copper-bronze in winter.

"Rheingold" is known for its golden, winter-bronze colour and soft juvenile needle-like foliage; the crown is broadly conical to oval. Colour is strongest in full sun and growth is slow (about 1–1.5 m high and wide when mature, approximate).

Suited to rock gardens, mixed borders, conifer groups and large containers; it looks especially good next to green and blue conifers. Its slow growth makes it ideal for small gardens.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in spring (April–May) or early autumn while the soil is still warm. Choose a full-sun position (the golden colour stays brighter); dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, keep the root collar level with the soil and space plants 1–1.5 m. Water in generously and mulch with bark or wood chips 5–7 cm deep.

Care. Do not let the soil dry out; choose a spot with good air circulation. Avoid waterlogging and a dry root ball, especially during the first two years; weed by hand and do not dig deeply, as conifer roots sit close to the surface.

Watering and feeding. In dry weather water once every 7–10 days (10–15 L per plant) and give a deep autumn watering before the freeze. Feed in spring with a conifer fertiliser containing magnesium and again in June; stop nitrogen from August.

Winter care and pruning. Fully hardy; the foliage turns copper-bronze in winter, which is typical for the cultivar. Shade young plants with light fleece in March–April against bright sun and shake heavy wet snow off the branches. No pruning is needed; if required, trim lightly in spring before growth starts.
