Eastern arborvitae "Salaspils" (Thuja occidentalis), also known as "Globosa Salaspils", is a compact, globe-shaped conifer with a very dense habit. This dwarf thuja suits rock gardens, front-of-border positions, low edging and container planting.

This cultivar of Latvian origin forms a dense, ball-shaped crown of dark green, scale-like foliage. According to Latvian nursery catalogues, a mature plant is about 0.6 m tall and 0.6 m wide; it grows slowly and needs little shaping.

It grows in full sun to partial shade and is well adapted to the Baltic climate. Use it as a specimen or in groups with other dwarf conifers.

Agronoma ieteikumi

Planting. Choose a sunny or partly shaded spot and dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Use a mix of garden soil, peat and compost, with the crown level with the soil. Plant in spring or early autumn.

Care. Mulch with a 5 cm layer (bark, peat) to hold moisture. The globe shape is natural; remove only dry or damaged shoots.

Watering and feeding. Water regularly for the first two years, especially in dry spells, as arborvitae does not tolerate a dried-out root ball. Feed in spring with a conifer fertiliser and stop nitrogen by August.

Winter and pruning. The cultivar is hardy, but protect young plants from spring sun scorch with fleece. Prune minimally and only in spring.
