Phacelia "NATRA", 200 g, Baltic Agro
Seller: ALLIKASILM
About this product
Phacelia "NATRA" (Phacelia tanacetifolia) — a green manure and a bee plant in one. It grows fast, covers the ground densely and leaves weeds no light; its roots loosen compacted soil. Cut and dug in, it leaves the bed organic matter the next crop can use straight away.
The second reason to sow it is the flowering. The coiled blue-violet heads are one of the best nectar sources for bees and bumblebees: a strip of phacelia beside the vegetable bed brings pollinators where they are needed. Height 60–80 cm.
Phacelia is related to none of our main crops — it fits anywhere in a rotation and carries no diseases of brassicas, potatoes or legumes. The pack holds 200 g, enough for about 100 m2. Producer Baltic Agro, Estonia.

Advice from our agronomist
Sowing. Broadcast and rake in lightly — seed left on the surface germinates poorly. No deeper than 2 cm.
As green manure. Cut at the start of flowering, or at the latest before the seed ripens, or phacelia will self-sow. Do not remove the cut material: mix it shallowly in or leave it as mulch.
Autumn sowing. Sown on a bed that frees up in summer, phacelia grows on before the frosts and shields the soil from autumn rain and frost heave.
For the bees. Sow in two or three batches three weeks apart — the strip then flowers nearly all summer instead of three weeks.
In rotation. Phacelia fits anywhere: it is no relation to brassicas, potatoes or legumes and breaks the cycle of their diseases.
