About this product

Chilli pepper "De Cayenne" is a mid-early Capsicum annuum variety with very hot, long, conical fruits. The seeds are from the Lithuanian company Nojaus sėklos, 0.3 g per packet. Buy "De Cayenne" chilli seeds in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.

Heat is 30,000–50,000 Scoville units. Use it as a spice: fresh, preserved or dried, including for ground cayenne. Picking starts 48–55 days after planting out and runs July–September.

It grows in a greenhouse or outdoors, best in a sunny, sheltered spot. In Estonia it is most reliable in a greenhouse, on a balcony or in a large pot.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Sow indoors in February–March (until early April), one seed per cell, 0.5–1 cm deep – peppers dislike pricking out. Keep at 22–27 °C; seedlings appear in 6–8 days. Plant out seedlings 30–35 cm tall with 15–18 leaves after the frosts, once days reach 13–15 °C, at 40 × 30 cm.

Watering and feeding. Water regularly with warm water, avoiding both drying out and waterlogging. Add compost (not fresh manure) before planting. From flowering, feed every 2 weeks with a potassium-phosphorus fertiliser.

Care. Aim for 22–25 °C by day and 17–20 °C at night; ventilate the greenhouse in hot weather. Tie tall plants to a cane. Pick fruit regularly to encourage new ones.

Gardener's tip. For drying, cut fully red fruits with the stalk, thread them on a string and dry in a warm, airy place. Wear gloves and keep your hands away from your eyes – capsaicin is very hot.
