About this product

European rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) is a native deciduous tree of Estonia that usually grows 8–15 m tall. The plant supplied is about 1.5 m tall.

In May–June the tree flowers with white clusters and in August–September bright orange to red berries ripen, attracting birds. In autumn the pinnate leaves turn yellow, orange and red, so the tree is ornamental all year.

Rowan is frost-hardy, undemanding and suits parks, gardens, hedges and landscape groups. It grows well in sun and partial shade on well-drained soil.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in spring or autumn in a sunny to partly shaded spot. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and plant at the same depth as in the pot.

Care. Water regularly for the first two years, especially in dry spells. Mulch with a 5–7 cm layer and keep the trunk clear.

Watering and feeding. A mature tree is moderately drought tolerant and does not need frequent watering. In spring give a little compost or general fertiliser.

Pruning and winter. If needed, remove dead and crossing branches in late winter before bud break. Rowan is very hardy and needs no winter cover, but a young trunk may need protection from rodents.
