Advice from our agronomist

Planting Plant in spring (May) or autumn in a sunny or partly shaded spot with fertile, well-drained soil; dark flowers hold their colour better in partial shade. Mix the soil with compost, set the crown 2–3 cm below the soil surface and water. Space plants 40–60 cm apart.

Watering Water regularly in the first year, later in dry spells and during flowering; mulch the soil.

Pruning Remove spent flower stems and, in autumn or spring, dead leaves; divide a dense clump every 4–5 years.

Feeding and winter care Feed in spring with compost or a complex fertiliser and repeat before flowering. Hardy and needs no special cover; the crown can be mulched in autumn.
