Pearl millet "Inky", 5 seeds, Baltic Agro
Seller: ALLIKASILM
About this product
Ornamental millet "Inky" (Pennisetum glaucum) — a striking annual grass whose long red flower spikes look like cattail heads. The foliage starts green and turns reddish-brown through the summer, so the plant is worth looking at before the spikes even appear.
At 110 cm it works at the back of a border or as a single accent in a large container. Drought tolerant — a dry summer will not break it; it is, however, frost tender, and the first night frost ends its season.
The spikes are excellent for cutting and drying: once cut they hold their colour for months. Packet of 5 seeds. Producer Baltic Agro, Estonia.

Advice from our agronomist
Start indoors. Sow in March or April under cover and plant out only once night frosts are past. Cold ruins the plant overnight, and sown direct it will not make spikes in our summer.
Sun. Choose the sunniest spot you have: in shade the red leaf colour never develops and you simply get a green grass.
Feeding. Do not overfeed. Rich soil gives lush foliage and fewer spikes — this millet prefers a modest diet.
In containers. Allow at least five litres of compost per plant: in a small pot it grows half as tall.
Drying. Cut the spikes in full colour, before the seed ripens, and hang them upside down in a dark, dry room.
