Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Plant sea buckthorn in spring in a sunny spot with light, well-drained soil. Space plants 2–3 m apart and put the male upwind.
Care. The shrub is thorny and suckers, so limit its planting area. Keep the bed weed-free and avoid digging near the roots.
Watering and feeding. Water young plants in the first year; later rain is enough. Skip nitrogen fertiliser because sea buckthorn fixes its own.
Winter and pruning. In February cut out dead and crowding stems and shape an open crown. Pick berries in September; no winter cover is needed.
