Hosta (Hosta) is one of the best perennials for shady gardens, offered here as assorted varieties. Buy hostas in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery – the exact variety depends on availability.
Hostas are grown mainly for their decorative leaves: green, blue-grey, golden or variegated with white. In midsummer stems of lilac or white bell-shaped flowers rise above the foliage. Height depends on the variety, usually 30–60 cm.
Hostas are very hardy (USDA 3–9) and long-lived – perfect under trees, in shade borders, by ponds and in large containers.

Care. Protect young leaves from slugs and snails. Cut back faded foliage in autumn or leave it until spring; divide clumps every 4–5 years.
Gardener's tip. Blue-leaved varieties keep their colour best in shade, while golden and variegated ones are brightest with morning sun.
