Advice from our agronomist
Planting Plant in spring (May) or autumn (late August – September) in shade or partial shade in moist, humus-rich soil; yellow-leaved cultivars tolerate more light, blue-leaved ones need deeper shade. Set the buds level with the soil and water. Space plants 30–80 cm apart depending on the cultivar's final size.
Watering Water generously and regularly, especially in dry spells – leaf edges turn brown in drought; water the soil rather than the leaves. Protect the plant from slugs.
Pruning Remove spent flower stems; in autumn clear dead leaves. Divide large clumps in spring.
Feeding and winter care Feed in spring with compost or a slow-release fertiliser; stop feeding by the end of July. Hardy; cover a young plant with a light mulch layer in its first winter.
