Hydrangea arborescens (smooth hydrangea) is a very hardy hydrangea native to North America that flowers on the current year's shoots every year – even after a hard winter has damaged the stems. This listing is for assorted varieties, depending on availability. Buy smooth hydrangea in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.

Large rounded or flat flower heads appear from June to September. The flowers open greenish, turn creamy white and later fade to tan, and some varieties are pink; dried heads stay decorative in winter. The shrub usually reaches 90–150 cm in height and spread.

The species is hardy in USDA zones 3–8 and suits the Estonian climate well. Use it in borders, hedges, groups and for cut and dried flowers.

Agronomo patarimai

Planting. Plant in sun or partial shade, sheltered from the midday heat. Dig a hole twice the size of the pot and add compost or acidic peat; plant at the same depth it grew in the pot. Space plants 1–1.5 m apart.

Watering and feeding. Hydrangeas need evenly moist soil – water generously in dry spells. Feed with a hydrangea or balanced fertiliser in spring and early summer; stop nitrogen from August.

Care. In early spring cut all stems back to 20–30 cm – flowers form on new shoots and hard pruning gives larger heads. Remove weak and frost-damaged branches.

Gardener's tip. Dried flower heads can be left on over winter – they look lovely in snow. If the large heads flop after rain, prune a little higher in spring (40–50 cm) for sturdier stems.
