Panicle hydrangea Hydrangea paniculata 'Milk & Honey' is sold as Living Milk & Honey ('LC NO17') from the Living Creations series, bred by a family nursery in the Netherlands. It is a compact hydrangea for small gardens and large containers. Buy Hydrangea 'Milk & Honey' in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery – we sell it as a potted plant.

The colour changes just as the name suggests: in July the panicles are light green, in August soft cream, and by September they take on a creamy-pink or honey-yellow blush. The conical heads last more than 100 days, from July into autumn.

The shrub grows about 0.9–1 m tall and 1–1.5 m wide. It copes well with part shade and tolerates drought better than mophead hydrangeas. It flowers on the current year's shoots, so it is pruned in early spring and still blooms reliably after a hard winter. It is hardy to species USDA 3–4; RHS H5, so in Estonia (zones 5–6) established plants overwinter without protection. Use: small gardens, patio containers, part-shade borders.

Agronoma ieteikumi

Planting. Plant in spring or September in sun or light shade (morning to midday sun is ideal). The soil should be moist, fertile and slightly acid (pH 5–6.5); do not add lime or fresh manure. Dig a 50×50 cm hole with peat and compost, keep the root collar at ground level and space plants 1–1.5 m apart.

Care. Mulch with pine bark or peat 5–7 cm deep to keep the soil from drying out. Panicle hydrangea is undemanding, disease-resistant and tolerates urban conditions; spent flower heads can stay on for winter decoration.

Watering and feeding. Water deeply – 10–20 L weekly in dry weather – and never let the root zone dry out. Feed with a hydrangea or rhododendron fertiliser in spring and again in early summer; stop nitrogen after mid-July.

Winter and pruning. The plant is very hardy (USDA zones 3–4) and needs no cover in Estonia; young bushes only need a mulch. Prune in March before the sap rises, cutting last year's shoots back by a third or to 2–3 pairs of buds for large flower heads.
