About this product

Panicle hydrangea Hydrangea paniculata 'Pandalus' is a compact cultivar from the Dutch PAN series (Hydrangea Breeders Association), a recent introduction. Plants in the series are bushy, flower early and need little shaping. Buy Hydrangea 'Pandalus' in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery – we sell it as a potted plant.

The panicles are conical, 15–20 cm long and pleasantly fragrant. They open lemon-white, then turn pink and by autumn become deep pink. Flowering is long – from June to October.

The shrub grows 0.8–1.2 m tall and about 1 m wide. The stems are strong and hold the heads well. It flowers on the current year's shoots, so it is pruned in early spring and still blooms reliably after a hard winter. It is hardy to USDA 5 (about −29 °C), so in Estonia (zones 5–6) established plants overwinter without protection. Use: small gardens, patios and terraces, containers, borders.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in spring or early autumn in sun or light shade, sheltered from strong wind. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and use fertile, slightly acidic soil (pH 5–6.5); add acidic peat or conifer compost. Do not bury the root collar. Spacing: 1–1.2 m.

Watering and feeding. Hydrangeas love moisture: in hot weather water 1–2 times a week with 10–15 L per plant and mulch the root area with bark or pine needles. Feed with a nitrogen fertiliser in spring and a complete hydrangea fertiliser in June–July; stop nitrogen from August so the shoots can ripen.

Care. This cultivar flowers on the current year's shoots. In early spring (March–April) remove weak and crowding branches and shorten the strong shoots to 2–4 pairs of buds (by one-third to two-thirds): the harder the pruning, the larger the panicles. Dry flower heads can be left on for winter interest. Established plants overwinter in Estonia without cover; young plants only need a mulch in their first winter.

Gardener's tip. 'Pandalus' does well in a large pot (20–30 L or more) on a terrace; for winter move the container against a wall and wrap it so the root ball does not freeze solid.
