About this product

Panicle hydrangea Hydrangea paniculata 'Silver Dollar' is a classic Dutch cultivar bred by Peter Zwijnenburg and holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. It is valued for large white panicles on sturdy stems that do not flop. Buy Hydrangea 'Silver Dollar' in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery – we sell it as a standard (tree form) on a clear stem.

The panicles are large and broad, made mostly of sterile florets. They open light green, turn almost pure white and in late summer and autumn take on a very light pink tint. Flowering runs from mid-July to October.

The shrub grows 1–1.5 m tall and up to 1.8 m wide (as a bush). On a standard the overall height depends on the stem, and the crown is shaped into a ball – it looks like a small flowering tree. It flowers on the current year's shoots, so it is pruned in early spring and still blooms reliably after a hard winter. It is hardy to USDA 4 (about −34 °C), so in Estonia (zones 5–6) established plants overwinter without protection. Use: accent by an entrance or terrace, in rose beds and mixed borders, large containers.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in spring or September in sun or light shade (morning to midday sun is ideal). The soil should be moist, fertile and slightly acid (pH 5–6.5); do not add lime or fresh manure. Dig a 50×50 cm hole with peat and compost, keep the root collar at ground level and space plants 1–1.5 m apart.

Care. Mulch with pine bark or peat 5–7 cm deep to keep the soil from drying out. Panicle hydrangea is undemanding, disease-resistant and tolerates urban conditions; spent flower heads can stay on for winter decoration.

Watering and feeding. Water deeply – 10–20 L weekly in dry weather – and never let the root zone dry out. Feed with a hydrangea or rhododendron fertiliser in spring and again in early summer; stop nitrogen after mid-July.

Winter and pruning. The plant is very hardy (USDA zones 3–4) and needs no cover in Estonia; young bushes only need a mulch. Prune in March before the sap rises, cutting last year's shoots back by a third or to 2–3 pairs of buds for large flower heads.
