About this product

Panicle hydrangea Hydrangea paniculata 'Tiny Quick Fire' is the most compact member of the Proven Winners Quick Fire line – Tiny Quick Fire® ('SMNHPSB'). Like its larger siblings, its main strength is very early flowering. Buy Hydrangea 'Tiny Quick Fire' in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery – we sell it as a potted plant.

The conical panicles open white with creamy overtones earlier than most panicle hydrangeas – already in early summer. In the second half of summer they turn pink and then reddish pink. Flowering continues into early autumn.

The shrub grows about 45–90 cm tall and 60–90 cm wide. It is drought-tolerant and attracts bees and butterflies. It flowers on the current year's shoots, so it is pruned in early spring and still blooms reliably after a hard winter. It is hardy to USDA 3, so in Estonia (zones 5–6) established plants overwinter without protection. Use: containers, borders, small gardens, cut and dried flowers.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in spring or early autumn in sun or light shade, sheltered from strong wind. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and use fertile, slightly acidic soil (pH 5–6.5); add acidic peat or conifer compost. Do not bury the root collar. Spacing: 60–80 cm.

Watering and feeding. Hydrangeas love moisture: in hot weather water 1–2 times a week with 10–15 L per plant and mulch the root area with bark or pine needles. Feed with a nitrogen fertiliser in spring and a complete hydrangea fertiliser in June–July; stop nitrogen from August so the shoots can ripen. In containers water more often and feed every 2–3 weeks until midsummer.

Care. This cultivar flowers on the current year's shoots. In early spring (March–April) remove weak and crowding branches and shorten the strong shoots to 2–4 pairs of buds (by one-third to two-thirds): the harder the pruning, the larger the panicles. Dry flower heads can be left on for winter interest. Established plants overwinter in Estonia without cover; young plants only need a mulch in their first winter.

Gardener's tip. Combine 'Tiny Quick Fire' with later cultivars – it opens the hydrangea season in the garden almost a month ahead of the rest.
