About this product

Standard (tree-form) panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) is an ornamental little tree: the hydrangea is grafted on a straight stem and forms a neat round crown.

It flowers abundantly from July into autumn with large panicles that start white and turn pink toward the end of the season. Lovely as a focal point by an entrance, in a large container or in a mixed border.

It likes sun or part shade and fertile, moist soil and is hardy (zones 3–4). This is the small stem form.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in spring or autumn in a sunny or part-shaded place. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, enrich the soil with compost, and drive a stake next to the straight stem and tie it with a soft strap.

Care. Mulch with bark or compost so the soil does not dry out. Cut off any wild shoots that grow from below the graft.

Watering and feeding. Water regularly and generously, especially in hot weather. Give hydrangea fertiliser in spring and repeat in June.

Winter care and pruning. In early spring before buds open, shorten the crown shoots to 2–3 pairs of buds for bigger flower heads. Mulch the base for winter and wrap the crown in fleece in severe frost.
