About this product

Climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris) is a vigorous climber that clings to its support with aerial roots and covers walls, fences and tree trunks.

In June–July it opens flat white lacy flower heads, the leaves turn yellow in autumn and the bark peels attractively in winter. It grows slowly but reaches 10 m or more when mature.

It tolerates shade well, including a north-facing wall, likes fresh fertile soil and is hardy (zones 4–5). This is the small size.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in spring or autumn next to a wall, fence or trunk, 30–40 cm from the support. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and add compost. At first guide and tie the shoots toward the support — later they cling by themselves.

Care. Mulch with bark. For the first 2–3 years the plant grows slowly and flowers little — this is normal.

Watering and feeding. Water regularly, especially in drought. Give compost or hydrangea fertiliser in spring.

Winter care and pruning. A mature plant overwinters without cover; mulch young plants. Prune right after flowering: remove surplus and dead shoots and shape the climber as needed.
