Ilex crenata
Pārdevējs: ALLIKASILM
Par preci
Ilex crenata (Japanese holly) is an evergreen small-leaved shrub that looks much like box. Buy it in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery for hedges, topiary or containers.
Dense branches carry glossy dark green leaves 1–3 cm long that stay all year. Tiny white flowers appear in May–June, and female plants bear black berries in autumn. It takes clipping well and is not attacked by the box tree moth, making it a popular box substitute.
It grows slowly to about 1.5–2 m in gardens and is easily kept smaller by trimming. Hardiness is about −23 °C (zone 6, RHS H6); in Estonia plant it where it is sheltered from wind and late-winter sun.

Planting. Plant in partial shade or sun, sheltered from wind. The soil must be lime-free and humus-rich – add acid peat or ericaceous compost. For a hedge, space plants 30–40 cm apart.
Watering and feeding. Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water thoroughly before the ground freezes so the plant does not dry out in winter. Feed in spring with an evergreen or conifer fertiliser.
Care. Trim in late May–June and again in August if needed. For the first winters shade the shrub from late-winter sun with light fleece.
Gardener's tip. Ilex crenata is a good choice where box suffers from box tree moth: it looks similar, but the pest leaves it alone.
