Chinese juniper Juniperus chinensis "Spartan"
Seller: ALLIKASILM
About this product
Juniperus chinensis "Spartan" is a narrow, columnar evergreen Chinese juniper forming a dense emerald-green column. It is one of the best junipers for a vertical accent and a narrow hedge. Buy Juniperus chinensis "Spartan" in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
The foliage is scale-like, fresh emerald green and not prickly, keeping its colour in winter. Growth is moderately fast; a mature plant reaches 3–5 m tall and 1–1.5 m wide and stays slim and regular even without clipping.
The variety is very hardy (USDA zone 4, to −34 °C) and well suited to the Estonian climate. Use it as a specimen, for a narrow screen or to frame an entrance; young plants also suit large containers.

Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Plant from spring to autumn in sun or light shade; in deep shade it becomes open. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, add compost and plant at the same depth as in the pot. For a hedge space plants 60–80 cm apart.
Watering and feeding. In the first year water deeply once a week in dry spells – it dislikes drying out. Mulch with bark. Feed in spring with a conifer fertiliser; no nitrogen after August.
Care. The habit is naturally narrow; trim if needed in early spring or midsummer. In snowy winters tie the branches loosely together so heavy snow does not splay them. Shade young plants with netting in their first spring.
Gardener's tip. For a quick narrow "Spartan" screen plant in a single row and trim only the sides – leave the leader alone until the hedge reaches the height you want.
