Wild garlic or ramsons, Allium ursinum, is a perennial woodland onion whose young leaves taste of mild garlic. Buy wild garlic seeds in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery: the Nojaus sėklos packet holds 0.2 g of seed.
The whole plant is edible: in spring the leaves are cut for salads, pesto and soups, later the flower buds and bulbs are used too. Plants grow 15–20 cm tall, bloom with white starry flowers in May and suit shady corners of the garden.
In the wild ramsons grow in moist deciduous woods, so they need humus-rich, moist soil and shade or part shade. They spread by seed and by bulbs and form a dense carpet over the years. The seeds need a cold period (stratification) to germinate.

Agronomo patarimai
Planting. The easiest way is to sow in autumn (September–November) straight into a shady bed, 1 cm deep – winter stratifies the seed naturally. For spring sowing keep the seed in damp sand in the fridge for 2–3 months and sow in April–May. Mark the spot, as seedlings may not appear until the following year.
Watering and feeding. Keep the soil constantly moist in spring and in the first months. Mulch with leaf mould or rotted leaves – it holds moisture and feeds the plants as in a woodland. Mineral fertiliser is not needed.
Care. In the first years weed the bed by hand so the young plants are not smothered. In the second half of summer the leaves yellow and the plant goes dormant – this is normal, do not cut the leaves.
Gardener's tip. Do not strip a plant of all its leaves – take one or two from each so the bulb grows stronger and the colony spreads. Ramsons leaves look like poisonous lily of the valley and autumn crocus, so grow them well away from those plants.
