Agronomin neuvot
Planting. Sow in March–April in light seed compost, 0.5 cm deep, at 20–22 °C. After germination move the seedlings somewhere cooler and brighter so they do not stretch. Plant out in early June after the last frost, 40 cm apart.
Watering and feeding. Water moderately – marigolds tolerate short dry spells but not waterlogging. Fertile soil needs no extra feed; on poor soil give a flower fertiliser once a month.
Care. Deadhead faded flowers so new buds keep coming until autumn. On windy sites stake the tall plants.
Gardener's tip. Plant marigolds next to cabbages and tomatoes – their scent deters some pests. Cut flowers last long in a vase if you strip the leaves below the water line.
