Par preci
Squash Cucurbita maxima "Melonowa Żółta" is an old Polish variety whose name means “yellow melon”: the flesh is yellow-orange, sweet and melon-like. Buy squash "Melonowa Żółta" seeds in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery: the AGRONOM packet holds 1.5 g of seed.
The fruit are large and round, good for porridge, soups, baking, juice and jam, and they store well. The plant makes long trailing vines and needs room.
Check the packet for the variety's details (maturity, fruit weight) – the growing advice here is general for winter squash. In Estonia it is grown from transplants: sow in May, plant out in early June.

Agronoma ieteikumi
Planting. Sow in May, 2–3 cm deep, one seed per pot, at 22–25 °C. Plant out in early June after the frost risk, 1 × 1 m apart, in full sun.
Watering and feeding. Water seldom but deeply, with warm water at the base. Add compost to the planting hole and feed every 2 weeks in summer with a potassium-rich vegetable fertiliser.
Care. Once 3–4 fruit have set, pinch out the vine tips so the fruit can ripen in Estonia's summer. Put a board or straw under the fruit.
Gardener's tip. Harvest with the stalk on and cure for 2 weeks in a warm place. Then store in a dry, cool room at 10–15 °C – the flesh gets sweeter in storage.
