About this product

Ornamental onion (Allium) 'Ostara' is a new hybrid bred from Allium karataviense and Allium atropurpureum. Sturdy stems carry large dark purple globe-shaped flower heads 10–15 cm across. Buy ornamental allium bulbs in Estonia from ALLIKASILM nursery.

Height about 40 cm. Flowers in May – June; the broad grey-green leaves stay attractive longer than on most other alliums.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant bulbs in autumn, September – October, in a sunny spot 10–15 cm deep and 15–20 cm apart. In heavy clay add sand to the planting hole.

Watering and feeding. Water in dry spells while growing in spring; no watering is needed after flowering. Feed with a bulb fertiliser in early spring.

Care. Let the leaves die back naturally after flowering so the bulb can build strength for next year. The seed heads can be dried or left in the garden for decoration.

Gardener's tip. Plant 'Ostara' in groups of 5–7 bulbs – the big purple globes look most striking that way.
