Seller: ALLIKASILM
About this product
Swiss chard "Rhubarb Chard" (Beta vulgaris) is a lush leafy vegetable with large crinkled leaves and thick dark red stalks. The packet holds 3 g of seed from the Lithuanian producer Nojaus sėklos. Buy chard seeds in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
Plants grow 50–60 cm tall, and the first leaves can be cut about 55 days after sowing. Both leaves and stalks are eaten.
Chard is not fussy about soil. Boil, braise, bake or use it in soups, salads and preserves; the red stalks also look good in a flower bed.

Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Sow in April–May direct outdoors, 2 cm deep, in rows 40 cm apart. Each seed cluster gives several seedlings – thin them to 25 cm.
Watering and feeding. Water well in dry spells to keep the leaves juicy and stalks tender. Add compost before sowing and give a nitrogen feed after a heavy cut.
Care. Pick the outer leaves gradually and leave the centre growing – you will harvest until autumn. Keep the bed weed-free and mulched.
Gardener's tip. Chard tolerates light autumn frosts. Use young leaves raw in salads and braise the thick stalks like asparagus.
