Coast leucothoe Leucothoe axillaris
Seller: ALLIKASILM
About this product
Leucothoe axillaris is an evergreen shrub of the heather family from North America with leathery, glossy leaves and gracefully arching branches. It brings colour to shady corners where many shrubs struggle. Buy Leucothoe in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
In late spring short clusters of white, urn-shaped flowers hang from the leaf axils. The dark green leaves turn purplish-red in winter, so the shrub is attractive all year round.
Depending on the form it grows 0.5–1.5 m tall and wide. It needs acid, moist soil and partial to full shade – a perfect companion for rhododendrons and hydrangeas.

Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Plant in spring in a shady, sheltered spot. Fill the hole with acid rhododendron compost (pH 4.5–5.5) – on chalky soil the leaves turn yellow. Keep the root collar at soil level and mulch with pine bark or needles.
Watering and feeding. Keep the soil evenly moist – the roots are shallow and do not tolerate drying out. Use rainwater if possible and feed in spring with rhododendron or ericaceous fertiliser.
Care. The shrub keeps a good shape naturally and needs little pruning. After flowering cut a few old or damaged stems to the base to rejuvenate it.
Gardener's tip. In Estonian winters cover young plants with spruce branches for the first years and shade them from sun in February–March – the evergreen leaves stay healthy and the winter red colour stays bright.
