About this product

Common privet Ligustrum vulgare is a dense, undemanding shrub used mostly for hedges. It carries fragrant white flowers in June–July and black berries in autumn (poisonous, not for eating). Buying privet for a hedge is one of the most practical choices.

It grows in sun or part shade and tolerates clipping, wind and city air. For a hedge plant about 30–40 cm apart and clip regularly to thicken it. In Estonia it is generally hardy; in a very hard winter shoot tips may freeze. Plants sold at 20–40 cm tall.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting Plant in spring or autumn in sun or light shade, in fertile, well-drained soil. Dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball, set the plant at the same depth as in the pot and water well.

Care Water regularly in the first season, later only in long dry spells. Mulch the root zone with bark or leaf compost and in spring remove frost-damaged, old and crowded shoots.

Use Clipped or informal hedge, windbreak and shrub groups.
