Sweet pea "Royal Family" (Lathyrus odoratus) is an annual climber with fragrant flowers in purple, pink and violet shades. The packet holds 2 g of seed from the Lithuanian producer Nojaus sėklos. Buy sweet pea seeds in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
Plants climb to 1.5–2 m and flower from June to September. The scented blooms are lovely in bouquets.
Sweet peas suit borders, fences, netting and balconies. You can sow very early, as the plants tolerate spring frosts.

Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Soak the seeds in warm water for a day before sowing. Sow in April–May direct outdoors 3–4 cm deep and 15–20 cm apart, or in March in pots – sweet peas dislike root disturbance, so use peat pots.
Watering and feeding. Water regularly, especially in flower – in dry soil flowering stops quickly. Feed 2–3 times over summer with a flower fertiliser; too much nitrogen gives leaves instead of flowers.
Care. Put up support when sowing – netting, strings or twigs for the tendrils to grip. Pinch out the tips when seedlings have 3–4 pairs of leaves for bushier plants.
Gardener's tip. Pick flowers often and do not let pods form – the more you cut, the longer sweet peas bloom.
