Par preci
Lupinus polyphyllus "Red Flame" (German "Rote Flamme") is a lupin with red flower spikes whose tall candles bring deep red colour to the summer border. Buy lupin "Red Flame" in a 9 cm pot in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
Dense candle-like spikes up to 40 cm long rise above the palmate leaves. It flowers in June–July and often again in August if the spent spikes are cut. The plant grows 90–120 cm tall and 40–60 cm wide.
Lupins are hardy (zone 4) and usually overwinter well in Estonia. They fix nitrogen from the air and are a valued bee plant for bumblebees. Ideal for cottage gardens and the back of a border.

Agronoma ieteikumi
Planting. Plant in spring or early autumn in sun in light, slightly acid soil. Lupins have a deep taproot – choose a permanent spot and plant with the rootball intact. Space plants 40–50 cm apart.
Watering and feeding. Water after planting and in dry spells in the first summer. No nitrogen is needed – lupins fix their own; a little phosphorus-potassium fertiliser in spring is enough.
Care. Cut spent spikes before seed sets so the plant reblooms and does not self-seed. Cut leaves to the ground in autumn. Stake flower stems in windy spots.
Gardener's tip. Lupins are short-lived (4–6 years) – keep some young plants in reserve. Check for aphids in early spring and wash them off with a jet of water.
