About this product

Garden lupin (Lupinus polyphyllus) is a stately old-fashioned perennial whose tall candle-like spikes are one of the most striking sights of early summer. The variety and flower colour of this plant are not specified – the species usually has violet-blue flowers, but they can also be pink, white or bicoloured. Buy Lupinus polyphyllus in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.

The plant grows 80–120 cm tall and flowers in June–July; if spent spikes are removed promptly it often flowers again. The palmate leaves are decorative all summer. The flowers are bumblebee favourites and good for cutting.

Lupin is very hardy (USDA zone 3) and feels at home in the Estonian climate. It prefers sun and light, well-drained, slightly acid soil. As a legume it fixes nitrogen from the air and improves the soil. Ideal for the back of the border, cottage gardens and the edges of the garden.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in spring or early autumn in a sunny spot, 40–50 cm apart. Lupins have a deep taproot and resent being moved – choose the final position straight away. Add sand to heavy clay.

Watering and feeding. Water regularly for the first weeks, later only in prolonged drought. No nitrogen fertiliser is needed – lupins fix their own. Do not lime: on chalky soil the leaves turn yellow.

Care. Cut off spent spikes promptly – the plant then flowers again and does not self-seed. Cut the foliage to the ground in autumn. Plants live 4–6 years, after which the planting should be renewed.

Gardener's tip. Do not let lupins ripen and scatter seed: seedlings easily escape into the wild and often lose the parent's colour. All parts of the plant, especially the seeds, are poisonous if eaten.
