Apple tree Malus domestica "Salla"
Seller: ALLIKASILM
About this product
'Salla' is an Estonian autumn dessert apple raised in 1956 in the Kivistik family garden in Karla village, Harju County. Until 1983 it was called 'Valge Paradiis'; it was registered as a variety in 2006. Buy a 'Salla' apple tree in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
The fruit is yellow to yellowish-white, some fruits with a red cheek, and tastes pleasantly sweet to sweet-sharp. It ripens in September and can be used until November. The apples are good fresh, for compote and for pickling.
The tree is productive and very winter-hardy – it was bred in the Estonian climate and suits the whole country. A good choice for a garden that needs an undemanding, reliable autumn apple.

Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Plant in spring or autumn (until the end of September) in a sunny spot sheltered from wind, where cold air and water do not collect. Dig a hole 60–80 cm wide and 50–60 cm deep and mix in compost. Keep the graft union 3–5 cm above soil level and tie the tree to a stake. Being very hardy, it also suits colder and more exposed gardens.
Watering and feeding. In the first summer water deeply once a week in dry spells (10–20 l per tree). In spring give a nitrogen fruit-tree fertiliser or compost; in the second half of summer use only potassium and phosphorus so the shoots ripen before winter. Keep the root zone weed-free and mulched.
Care. Do formative pruning in early spring before bud break: remove dead, crossing and inward-growing branches. In heavy years prop up the lower branches so they do not break. In autumn protect the trunk from rodents with a guard and whitewash it.
Gardener's tip. Use part of the crop straight away for compote or pickles – 'Salla' apples preserve well. For fresh eating keep them cool until November.
