Ābele Malus domestica "Veteran"
Pārdevējs: ALLIKASILM
Par preci
'Veteran' is a winter apple of Russian origin that has been grown in Estonia for decades; a reference sample is kept in the collection of the Polli Horticultural Research Centre. It is valued for early bearing, good yields and long storage. Buy a 'Veteran' apple tree in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
The fruit is fairly large, broad-round to round, ripening golden yellow with a striped red blush and a waxy coating. The flesh is juicy and pleasantly sweet-sharp. Pick in September; it is ready to eat in November–December and keeps until spring.
The tree has medium vigour, bears early and crops well, but tends to fruit every other year. Scab resistance is fair and winter hardiness fair to good.

Planting. Plant in spring or autumn (until the end of September) in a sunny spot sheltered from wind, where cold air and water do not collect. Dig a hole 60–80 cm wide and 50–60 cm deep and mix in compost. Keep the graft union 3–5 cm above soil level and tie the tree to a stake. Plant in a warm spot sheltered from wind – hardiness is rather average.
Watering and feeding. In the first summer water deeply once a week in dry spells (10–20 l per tree). In spring give a nitrogen fruit-tree fertiliser or compost; in the second half of summer use only potassium and phosphorus so the shoots ripen before winter. Keep the root zone weed-free and mulched.
Care. Do formative pruning in early spring before bud break: remove dead, crossing and inward-growing branches. To reduce biennial bearing, thin the fruitlets in June after a heavy bloom. In autumn protect the trunk from rodents with a guard and whitewash it.
Gardener's tip. Pick in September before night frosts and let the apples mature in a cellar – the best flavour comes in November–December.
