Cup-and-saucer vine (Cobaea scandens) is a vigorous climber with large bell-shaped flowers that is grown as an annual in Estonia. The packet contains 8 seeds; it flowers from July to October and reaches 4 m in height.
Cobaea grows fast and covers a gazebo, arch, netting or fence in a single season. The flowers are bell-shaped, greenish at first and later changing colour; the plant loves a sunny spot and a warm summer.
Sow the seeds for seedlings in February–March about 1 cm deep and plant out after frosts at roughly 100 × 100 cm next to a tall support.

Agronoma ieteikumi
Sowing. Sow in February–March for seedlings: place the seeds flat or on edge in light substrate about 1 cm deep and cover with film. Temperature +18…+20 °C; the seeds germinate slowly, so be patient.
Planting. Plant the seedlings in their permanent place after frosts, in a sunny, wind-sheltered spot. Space about 100 cm apart and install netting, a trellis or a support at least 2–3 m tall straight away.
Care. Water regularly, never letting the soil dry out, and feed with a flowering-plant fertiliser every 2 weeks. Avoid excess nitrogen, otherwise the vine produces lots of foliage and few flowers.
Winter. Cobaea does not overwinter outdoors in Estonia and dies at the first frosts; it is grown as an annual and sown again every year.
