Agronomo patarimai
Planting. Sow in late April–May, one seed per 8–10 cm pot, 1.5–2 cm deep, at 25–28 °C. Plant out seedlings with 3–4 leaves into the greenhouse in late May–early June, with the root ball slightly above soil level so the stem base does not rot.
Watering and feeding. Water with warm water at the base, not on the leaves; cut back watering as the fruit ripen so they are sweeter. Add compost before planting and feed every 10–14 days with a potassium-rich fertiliser from flowering.
Care. Pinch out the main stem above the 4th–5th leaf and keep 2–3 side shoots, with 1–2 fruit on each. In a greenhouse hand-pollinate with a soft brush if needed. Rest the fruit on a board or support it in a net.
Gardener's tip. A melon is ripe when the stalk starts to separate and the fruit smells strongly. Ventilate the greenhouse on hot days but close it at night – melons do not tolerate temperatures below +12 °C.
