Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is the classic culinary herb with a sweet, fresh mint scent – the mint for mojitos, tea and summer salads. Buy spearmint in a 9 cm pot in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
The leaves are bright green, oval and toothed, 5–9 cm long and milder than peppermint because they contain less menthol. In summer pale lilac flower spikes appear that bees love. It grows 50–100 cm tall.
Spearmint is extremely hardy (RHS H7) and spreads quickly by underground runners. Grow it in a herb bed, kitchen garden or a large pot on the balcony.

Agronomin neuvot
Planting. Plant from spring to autumn in sun or part shade. As mint spreads by runners, plant it in a bottomless bucket, an edged bed or a large pot.
Watering and feeding. Keep the soil moist – in drought the leaves stay small and tough. Add compost in spring; feed potted plants with liquid fertiliser once a month in summer.
Care. Cut the shoots regularly to keep the plant bushy and the leaves tender. Leaves picked before flowering are the most aromatic. Cut stems to the ground in autumn.
Gardener's tip. For drying, cut stems before flowering on a dry morning and dry them in the shade. Divide and replant every 3–4 years to keep the mint vigorous.
