Miscanthus sinensis, or Chinese silver grass, is a large, tough ornamental grass that forms a dense, fountain-like clump of long arching leaves. Buy Chinese silver grass in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
In late summer and autumn, September–October, silky branched plumes rise above the leaves and stay attractive through winter, looking superb with frost. In autumn the foliage takes on warm yellowish tones.
Depending on the form it reaches 1.5–2 m (taller in good conditions). It loves full sun and moist but free-draining soil and suits specimen planting, the back of borders, pond edges and large containers.

Agronomo patarimai
Planting. Plant in spring or early summer in a sunny spot so the plant establishes well before winter. Dig a hole twice the width of the pot, add compost and leave at least 1 m to neighbouring plants.
Watering and feeding. Water regularly in dry spells during the first summer; later the grass copes with short dry periods. Feed in spring with compost or a little general fertiliser – too much nitrogen makes the stems flop.
Care. Leave the dry stems standing over winter: they protect the crown and look decorative. Cut all old stems back to 10–15 cm in early spring, before new shoots appear.
Gardener's tip. Miscanthus starts growing late – do not worry if the clump is still brown in early May. Divide old clumps with a spade in spring to rejuvenate them.
