Advice from our agronomist

Sowing. Sow seeds in April singly in 8–10 cm pots about 2–3 cm deep and keep at 20–25 °C. Plant seedlings outdoors only after the last frosts, in late May or June.

Care. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot and space plants 80–100 cm apart. The trailing vines can sprawl over the bed or climb a net.

Watering and feeding. Water regularly, especially while fruit is setting, but at the base rather than over the leaves. Feed with compost and an organic fertiliser once a month.

Harvest and seed storage. Pick the squash before the first autumn frosts, when the skin is hard and the stalk has dried. Store in a cool, dry place; a long stalk helps keeping.
