• Harvest: September–October

• Use: raw in salads, frying, stewing, winter storage
• Size: packet 3 g (about 250–300 seeds)

Planting. Sow direct from June to August, 2–3 seeds per station, 1.5–2 cm deep, rows 30 cm apart and stations 20–25 cm apart. Do not sow in spring – daikon bolts easily in long days. Good preceding crops are early potatoes, peas or lettuce.

Watering and feeding. Water evenly, especially while the roots swell – drought makes them stringy and hot. Fertile soil needs no extra feed; do not use fresh manure, which makes the roots fork and split.

Care. Thin each station to the strongest seedling. Keep the soil loose and weed regularly. Protect young plants from flea beetle with fleece.

Gardener's tip. Lift daikon in September–October before hard frosts, easing it out by the leaves or with a spade. Trim the leaves and store the roots in damp sand in a cellar – they keep all winter.
