About this product

"Ojebyn" is an old Swedish blackcurrant variety (Ribes nigrum) from northern Sweden, very hardy and vigorous.

The berries are black, juicy, sweet with a hint of acidity and aromatic; they ripen from mid-July. Good fresh, for jam, compote and freezing.

The variety is self-fertile, though cropping is usually heavier with another variety nearby. It likes fresh, well-drained soil without standing water.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in autumn or early spring in a sunny or lightly shaded place. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and add compost; plant 5–7 cm deeper than it grew in the pot to encourage new shoots. Space bushes 1–1.5 m apart.

Care. Mulch the base with compost or bark and remove weeds. Watch for big bud mite, mildew and anthracnose.

Watering and feeding. Water in drought and while berries swell. Give nitrogen or balanced fertiliser in spring and potassium and phosphorus in autumn.

Winter care and pruning. Overwinters without cover. Each year after harvest or in late winter remove the oldest (over 4–5 years) and crowded branches, leaving 10–12 strong shoots of mixed ages.
