Paeonia lactiflora "Festiva Maxima" is a Chinese herbaceous peony — one of the best-known and oldest varieties (France, 1851). Large white double flowers with a few crimson flecks in the centre have a strong, pleasant fragrance. Buy peony "Festiva Maxima" in Estonia from ALLIKASILM — a long-lived perennial that grows in one spot for decades.

It grows up to 90 cm and flowers in June, early to mid-season. A favourite cut flower and classic wedding peony; the dark green foliage stays attractive until autumn.

Ideal for perennial borders, edging paths, as a specimen on a lawn and for cutting — the flowers last long in a vase. A good choice for new and established gardens alike.

Agronomin neuvot

Planting. The best planting time is August–September; pot-grown plants can be planted all season. Choose a sunny spot and dig a deep hole enriched with compost. Keep the buds 3–5 cm below the soil surface — peonies planted too deep will not flower.

Watering and feeding. Water generously in spring at the start of growth and when buds form. Feed with a nitrogen fertiliser in spring and a phosphorus- and potassium-rich one after flowering.

Care. The heavy double flowers benefit from a peony support. Deadhead spent blooms and leave the foliage until autumn.

Overwintering. Cut the stems down to ground level after autumn frosts. The peony is hardy; young plants can be lightly mulched in their first winter.
