Oriental poppy (Papaver orientale) is a tough perennial whose huge orange-red flowers are one of the highlights of the early-summer border. Buy an oriental poppy in a 9 cm pot in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
The bowl-shaped flowers are up to 15 cm across with dark purple-black blotches at the base of the petals. It flowers in June. The plant grows up to 90 cm tall with finely divided, hairy, silvery-green leaves.
It is very hardy (RHS H6) and long-lived in well-drained soil. After flowering the leaves turn yellow and the plant goes dormant; a fresh rosette appears in autumn. Good for pollinators.

Agronomo patarimai
Planting. Plant in spring or late August–September in a sunny spot where it can stay for years – with its deep taproot the oriental poppy dislikes being moved. Space plants 50–60 cm apart.
Watering and feeding. Water after planting and in dry spells in the first summer. In spring compost or a little general fertiliser is enough. Avoid standing water and wet soil in winter.
Care. Cut off the flower stems after blooming. Yellowing leaves can be cut back – the plant rests and grows new leaves in autumn. Tall stems need support in windy places.
Gardener's tip. Plant later perennials (cranesbills, asters, grasses) next to poppies to fill the gap they leave in summer. For cutting, pick in bud and sear the stem end.
