About this product

Perovskia atriplicifolia (Russian sage) is a sub-shrub with silvery foliage and blue-violet flower spikes that blooms from late summer into autumn and loves dry, sunny spots. Buy Perovskia atriplicifolia in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.

The tall, long panicles are made of many tiny blue flowers and are very attractive to bees. The whole plant is aromatic and smells of sage when rubbed. It grows up to 1–1.2 m tall and 0.5–1 m wide.

It is drought- and heat-tolerant and overwinters well (RHS H5) in light soil without standing water. Use it in gravel gardens, dry borders and with grasses and roses. Botanists now place Perovskia in the genus Salvia.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in spring or early summer in the sunniest, driest spot. Add sand or grit to heavy clay so that water does not stand around the roots in winter. Space plants 60–80 cm apart.

Watering and feeding. Water only after planting and during the first weeks; established plants cope well with drought. Hardly any fertiliser is needed – rich soil makes the stems soft and floppy.

Care. Leave the dry stems over winter to protect the plant. In spring (April) cut them back to 20–30 cm – the new shoots flower the same year.

Gardener's tip. The blue spikes look great with grasses, yellow goldenrods and roses. Rub a leaf between your fingers – its sage scent is a pleasant surprise in the garden.
