Physocarpus opulifolius "Summer Wine" (also sold as "Seward") is a ninebark with deep burgundy foliage. In June the shoots carry pinkish-white flower clusters and the old bark peels decoratively. Very hardy and easy to grow.

Planting Plant in spring or autumn in fertile, well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, plant at the same depth as in the pot, then water well and mulch.
Care Water regularly in dry spells during the first year. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring, remove dry or frost-damaged shoots and shape the shrub if needed.
Use Suits hedges, groups and as a specimen; the coloured foliage adds contrast in a bed. Prune after flowering to keep the shrub dense.
