About this product

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) is a conifer native to Estonia, known for its straight trunk and reddish-brown bark. Young plants suit hedges, woodland groves and large garden schemes.

The tree grows 20-35 m tall and is very hardy (USDA 2-8) and drought tolerant. It prefers a sunny position and light sandy or gravelly soil.

Scots pine is long-lived, very undemanding and brings a forest scent to the garden. The crown is conical when young and becomes broad and open with age.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in spring or autumn in a sunny spot with light, well-drained soil. Allow 1-1.5 m between trees in a hedge and at least 5 m for a single tree.

Care. Pruning is not required; to control shape pinch the young candles in spring. Remove dead lower branches.

Watering and feeding. Water in dry spells during the first years; later watering is unnecessary. Rich soil and heavy nitrogen are not needed.

Winter care. Fully hardy without cover. Protect young plants from deer and hares and shake heavy wet snow off the branches.
